What are we waiting for?

A Chinese airport executive got executed for taking bribes, this is the second high-profile execution of a chinese official for taking bribes in recent years.

India lacks any such judiciary/ political will to punish, or worse still apprehend, any government official mis-using his/her position for financial gains. A simple ammendment of laws punishing corrupt government officials could send a chill down the spine of every official who considers bribe as a his birth right in India. Setting an example like China has done is absolutely critical to send a message to the majority of the corrupt individuals.

Mr. Minister comes up with fantastic schemes that make tall promises of "inclusive growth" having a "multiplier effect" in the economy, well does he truely believe that the Babus / Beurocrats / Politicians who are reponsible for the implementation of the National Rural Employment Gurantee Scheme (NREGS) and Farmer Debt Releif Schemes (FDRS) will implement these schemes without coffing up enough money to last them a million life times. Cutting to the chase: corruption has always been and will remain a growth nullifier. No scheme/idea/plan is effective if the implementation is shrouded by the darkness of corruption.

I think this brings us to the bigger question; Do we really want stricter laws ? Do we really want to eradicate corruption? If yes, What are we waiting for?

Pangea - Truely One World

Imagine how the global economy would have been if the world was still one large land mass - Pangea (Name given to the single supercontinent believed to have disintegrated over billions of years to for the present day continents).

One can look back at the geological history of the planet and find answers to the way the global economy and society may evolve in the coming years. This idea may sound repulsive or absurd on the onset, but a little bit of imagination will help you see the light.

While there are experts around the world trying to predict the fate of the modern civilization and socio-economic evolution, I feel the answer lies in re-sketching the global map the way it may have been a couple of billion years ago (obviously there was no map back then, screw maps ! there was no concept of time then).

As technology has shrunk the planet and the virtual world starts taking precedence over the real world; in- effect what we are witnessing is the movement of the continents back towards formation of one supercontinent (or shall we call it one world). This phenomenon has been unfolding over centuries of human activity but has never been so evident before. A stock market crash in New York could mean Mr. Wang in China will lose his job, A bunch of un-organized pirates from Somalia can give sleepless nights to traders in the whole of Europe and Asia, A detection of a flu virus in South America could result in huge decline in tourism revenues in Asia-Pacific. These are signs of human un-doing of a dis-connection devised by nature billions of years back, whether we like it or not we are forming our own supercontinent. If we take a look around it’s not very difficult for us to notice the striking similarities between two geographically, culturally and politically different countries. As the globe evolves into a smaller virtual world, people are slowly but surely coming together in every way. Peoples tastes, preferences, choices are constantly evolving and is increasingly getting influenced by the global common knowledge of best in-class. The interdependency for resources has created a need for greater co-operation and this in turn has led to the formation of a much stronger global community.

As time passes lessons will be learnt and wisdom will prevail. Gaps between the developed and the developing countries will get narrower. The world will start understanding and speaking a common language (I mean literally). Newer generations will get more tolerant towards the dis-similarities in religious and regional beliefs. These changes and many other changes in the socio-economic-cultural spheres will give rise to a new world order. As the world will see its interests and issues merge, organizations such as the United Nations, International Monetary Fund etc. will get more powerful as governance and legislative bodies. The need for several fragmented financial and monetary governance will gradually diminish and multiple currencies will be viewed as an inhibiter in the global trade; we may see entities like the World Bank acting as the issuer of the one global currency.

I think if the world were to remain a giant continent as it was billions of years ago, with its entire land dwelling species sharing a common land mass; we would have achieved the above stated commonality a few million years ago, or may not ?

The Terrorist Within

“The virtues and vices of a government are not inherent in government but derived from those of its people” - M.K. Gandhi

India - A euphoric nation that tries to sight every small or big success as a sign of its emergence as a global super power, a nation that has been trying to convince itself of being on the path to economic supremacy given all rots that flows within the indian veins (literally).

"Any nation is only as good as its people" and if one was to go by this we as Indians very well know how good our nation is (as we very well know the goodness of our poeple, in a collective sense). We as a nation suffer from a "Deep Character Issue"; lack of basic civic sense, moral sense, sense of collective responsiblity, petty thought process (and the list can go on). These deamons that we breed within, day in and day out, overlooking their assault on our family, society, and above all ourselves has led to birth of the TERRORIST WITHIN.

Well I am not trying to take you on a philosophical roller coaster, all i trying to do is identify the root cause of the problem that plagues our nation (i.e if you consider India as your nation).

After the Mumbai Attacks we demand strong action against terrorism, talk about a resolve to counter terrorism, sign petitions and take pledges to severely punish the Perpetrators; this is exactly where the hipocracy of our indian character lies. If another Kandahar type hostage situation arises tomorrow, we will probably be the first ones to rush to the prime minister & the president of our GREAT NATION to release these so called Perpetrators in exchange for our loved ones taken hostage. You see my point ?? The resolve is not quite a resolve, is it ?? Even after all that we have lost !!

I firmly believe ....Unless we truly become the change we want to see in the society, unless the cleansing starts from within, unless we show a resolve to actually lose everything for the cause we stand by WE CANNOT BEAT THAT TERRORIST WHO IS DETERMINED TO GIVE UP HIS LIFE FOR A CAUSE THAT HE TRUELY BELIEVES IN !!!!!!!!!!

I still dont think you got it !!! Live like a SCUM and you will die like ONE !!!

On the death bed of Indian Cricket : An Obituary

11 November 2008 (A day after the end of the famous Nagpur test between India and Australia).

Although I have not been a die hard cricket fan in the last 5 years, and I have practically ignored most of the series India has played.

Although I am not a Bengali who takes pride in calling Dada the prince of Kolkata nor i am a Kanadigga who considers jumbo as a youth icon. I am feeling a sense of emptiness with Saurav Ganguly’s & Anil Kumble’s retirement.

It feels like my childhood has finally ended.

Now I understand the true meaning of the song “Losing my Religion” , needless to say I was talking about cricket when I said religion.
